TL;DR: Diode laser (808–940 nm) delivers safe and efficient hair removal across a broad Fitzpatrick range (I–V). Slightly deeper penetration than Alexandrite, more economical for darker skin types. Modern platforms (Soprano Ice Platinum, LightSheer Duet, Vectus, Primelase, Mediostar) use SHR / In-Motion technology for near-painless, continuous-movement treatment.
How diode works
Semiconductor diode emission at 808 or 940 nm is absorbed by melanin — less than Alexandrite, more than Nd:YAG. Penetration depth 3–5 mm reaches the follicular bulge directly.
Pulse modes
- HR (High Rate / Standard): high energy, short pulse — classic hair removal
- SHR / Motion / In-Motion (Soprano family): low energy, many pulses, continuous movement — less painful, safer in darker skin
- Multi-wavelength (Soprano Ice Platinum: 755/810/1064): one device for all skin types
Indications
- Full-body hair removal (primary indication)
- Male back/chest/shoulders
- Female face/underarms/bikini/legs
- PCOS hirsutism — long-term maintenance
- Pseudofolliculitis barbae (ingrown beard hair)
- Transgender full-body care
Skin type suitability
| Fitzpatrick | Diode |
|---|---|
| I–II | Ideal |
| III–IV | Ideal |
| V | Safe (SHR mode + cooling) |
| VI | Limited — Nd:YAG preferred |
Diode is safer than Alexandrite for Fitzpatrick IV–V.
Sessions
| Area | Sessions | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Upper lip / chin | 8–10 | 4–6 weeks |
| Underarms | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks |
| Bikini | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks |
| Legs | 6–8 | 8–10 weeks |
| Back | 8–10 | 8 weeks |
Annual maintenance: 1–2 sessions.
Platforms
| Brand | Notes |
|---|---|
| Soprano Ice Platinum (Alma) | 3 wavelengths, SHR motion |
| LightSheer Duet (Lumenis) | Large vacuum-assisted spot |
| Vectus (Cynosure) | 23 mm spot, fast large-area |
| Primelase HR | High energy, multi-mode |
| Mediostar Next Pro | Fast pulse repetition |
Side effects
Expected: perifollicular redness 1–4 h, hair shedding 5–10 days post-session. Less common: mild hypo- or hyperpigmentation. Rare: burn (wrong energy or cooling failure), scarring, paradoxical hair growth (rare on face).
Contraindications
- Active sunburn / new tan
- Active herpes
- Isotretinoin in last 6 months
- Pregnancy / breastfeeding
- Keloid tendency
- Active vitiligo
- Photosensitizing medication
- Recent waxing/epilation
Pre/after care
Same as Alexandrite. SHR/Motion modes reduce pain significantly.
Alexandrite vs Diode — practical
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Faster results in Type I–III? | Alexandrite |
| Broader skin-type safety? | Diode |
| Best for dark female face? | Diode 940 SHR mode |
| Less painful? | Diode SHR mode |
| Faster for large areas? | Diode (wide-spot platforms) |
FAQ
Soprano Ice Platinum? Alma's 3-wavelength (755/810/1064) + motion-mode device. Versatile across skin types. SHR painless? Not literally painless but markedly less than classic HR. Diode or Alex? Skin-type-dependent — discussed at consultation. Home IPL same as diode? No. Home IPL has very low energy; delays growth only. Male suitability? Yes — most common areas: back, chest, shoulders, neck, beard contouring.
Our approach
- Skin-type + hormonal assessment
- Contact cooling required
- Test patch + before/after photo
- Written informed consent
- CE/FDA-approved device, certified operator
Conclusion
Diode is the safe choice for a broad patient population. SHR / motion modes make it the preferred device for darker skin types and large body areas.
