Are HIFU, MFU and MFU-V the same? Why does visualization matter?

HIFU is a broad technology label; microfocused ultrasound (MFU) and MFU with real-time visualization (MFU-V) are not automatically equivalent in device design, target tissue, intended use or evidence. Decisions require the exact make, model and current instructions for use.

The HIFU label alone does not identify a device's energy delivery, transducer or clinical evidence.
Visualization may help identify a target plane, but it cannot eliminate mistargeting or other risks.

Identify the device before interpreting the label

Clinics and online material may use HIFU, focused ultrasound and microfocused ultrasound interchangeably. Yet the exact device, energy delivery, transducer depths, visualization feature and manufacturer-defined intended use may differ. An FDA 510(k) record supplies regulatory information only for the named device and comparison; it does not approve every HIFU product or establish registration in Türkiye.

What visualization can and cannot add

In MFU-V systems, visualization may help assess tissue contact and the intended anatomical plane during treatment. It does not by itself guarantee appropriate patient selection, correct energy and line planning, practitioner training or complication management. A system without visualization also cannot be judged safe or effective from a marketing label alone.

Information to verify in consultation

Ask for the make and model, transducers, visualization capability, Turkish registration, intended area, proposed protocol and whether the cited evidence concerns that exact device. Personal suitability requires an in-person assessment of skin and soft-tissue thickness, degree of laxity, implants, prior procedures and expectations.
