How should burns, blisters and superficial skin injury after HIFU be assessed?

Brief redness can occur after HIFU, but marked pain, blistering, sharply demarcated pallor or darkening, crusting and an open wound should not be treated as routine recovery. Timing, contact, transducer, energy and co-applied products need assessment together.

Separate expected redness from injury

Distinguish mild, resolving redness and warmth from intense or persistent pain, a fluid-filled blister, mottling, an open wound or evolving discoloration. Record onset, progression, distribution, sensation and muscle function. Early erythema can be harder to see in darker skin, so assessment should not rely on colour alone; temperature, tenderness, pain and tissue integrity also matter.

Review the technical chain

Preserve the device, software, transducer or cartridge, lot or serial, energy, depth, lines, passes and treatment-area record. Consider transducer damage, inadequate or incompatible coupling, incomplete contact over a fold and repeated delivery at the same point. No single finding automatically proves cause; maintenance logs and manufacturer investigation may be needed.

Care and follow-up limits

Do not rely on online product advice when there is an open wound, possible infection, rapidly worsening pain or a neurological sign.
