How do spot size, wavelength and penetration interact in laser settings?

A larger spot or longer wavelength does not by itself mean deeper, stronger or safer treatment. Tissue chromophore, scattering, fluence, pulse duration, beam profile, repetition, cooling and anatomical region together determine the actual thermal effect.

  • Wavelength affects which chromophores absorb energy; it does not determine the indication alone.

Match wavelength to target

Melanin, hemoglobin and water absorb wavelengths differently, while scattering and energy loss change with depth. Selective photothermolysis depends not only on wavelength but on a pulse suited to target thermal relaxation and enough controlled energy. The same wavelength may use different devices, pulses and endpoints for hair, vessels, pigment or resurfacing. A marketing name cannot replace the physical parameter record.

The two-sided effect of spot size

Under selected conditions, a larger spot can support deeper energy distribution by reducing relative edge scattering, but total area, peak energy, beam uniformity and contact also change. A small spot may allow precise targeting while increasing superficial concentration or overlap risk at the same fluence. Millimetres alone are not a safe setting without scanner pattern, spacing and repeat passes.

Connect settings to endpoint and record

Skin tone, tan, target diameter and depth, anatomical region, cooling and previous response alter the starting plan. A test area may help in selected contexts but cannot fully predict delayed pigment or scarring. Record manufacturer and model, handpiece, spot, wavelength, pulse, fluence or energy, frequency, cooling, passes and observed endpoint. A successful number from another device is not evidence of equivalence or personal safety.
