How should fire, oxygen and flammable-product risk be managed during laser and IPL?

Laser or IPL energy can create a fire risk when combined with an oxygen-enriched environment, dry gauze, hair, alcohol-based antiseptic or another fuel. A surface that looks dry is not proof of safety; ignition source, fuel and oxidizer need coordinated control.

Recognize the fire triangle

An energy device can be the ignition source; gauze, hair, plastic or skin preparation the fuel; supplemental oxygen the oxidizer. Controlling all three is a shared team responsibility. Ask about oils, aerosols and products applied at home. Medical use does not make a material nonflammable under laser exposure.

Pretreatment control

Read fire warnings for the wavelength and exact device. Plan oxygen need and flow with the clinical team and confirm removal or complete drying of flammable preparations. Protect hair and textiles appropriately and remove reflective or heatable material. The checklist should include emergency stop and access to the device key.

If an event occurs

On smoke, spark or ignition, stop energy and, when appropriate, oxygen flow, remove burning material and follow the institutional fire protocol. Assess burn depth and inhalation exposure. Record device, consumables, preparation product, oxygen setting and time. Restarting the console is not enough; review root cause and training gaps.
