Why are swallowing, speech and breathing symptoms after botulinum toxin urgent?

Botulinum-toxin labels describe reports of swallowing, speech and breathing difficulty from possible spread of effect, beginning hours to weeks after injection. Although uncommon, these symptoms can be life-threatening and should not wait for routine follow-up or a message reply.

Name the warning symptoms

New difficulty with liquids or solids, repeated coughing, a wet or muffled voice, slurred speech, inability to get enough air, generalized weakness, double vision or difficulty holding the head upright warrants attention. Record the risk history

Document pre-existing swallowing or breathing disease, neuromuscular disorder, recent other botulinum toxin, aminoglycosides or drugs affecting neuromuscular transmission, neck treatment and total product. A label warning does not show that every event occurs at a cosmetic dose, but rarity is not a reason to dismiss early symptoms.
