How should HIFU transducer depth, energy lines and the anatomical target be assessed?

A depth printed on a transducer does not guarantee that energy forms in the same tissue in every person. Tissue thickness, contact, treatment area, device calibration and line planning must be considered together; total shot count alone cannot establish quality or safety.

Nominal depth is not the same as the actual target

Focused-ultrasound transducers may be described by nominal depths, while skin, fat and connective-tissue thickness vary between people and across the face and neck. Probe contact, angle, pressure and device operation may also influence the energy focus. A transducer combination selected from the internet is therefore not a personal treatment plan.

Why line count is not a measure of success

More energy lines do not automatically produce a better result; off-target energy may increase pain and unintended tissue effects. Insufficient or poorly distributed energy may also fail to create the intended change. Because study protocols and devices are heterogeneous, a fixed line count should not be presented as a universal evidence-based standard.

A safety framework before planning

The consultation should document the intended change, laxity, tissue thickness, sensitive anatomical areas, implants, dental or facial surgery and prior energy procedures.
