When and with which photographs should a HIFU result be assessed?

A HIFU result cannot be measured reliably from one photograph immediately after treatment. Early swelling and positioning can change appearance; studies commonly assess outcomes weeks or months later with standardized images and scales.

Why timing matters

Microfocused-ultrasound studies often use follow-up points such as 90 and 180 days, with some reporting longer observation. These are research time points chosen to examine tissue remodelling. How to create comparable photographs

Baseline and follow-up images should use the same camera, lens or focal setting, distance, lighting, background, head angle and neutral expression. Hairline, chin-to-neck angle and weight change should be recorded. Filters, portrait mode, different lenses and selection of the most favourable frame can exaggerate apparent change.

What else belongs in interpretation

Photography should be interpreted with the person's reported change, a standardized clinical assessment and examination. Studies of mild-to-moderate laxity do not show equivalence to surgery for advanced laxity. If the intended change is absent, device, protocol, baseline finding and alternatives require reassessment rather than an automatic extra session.
