How should suspected fat loss or atrophy after HIFU be assessed?

Fat loss and atrophy have been reported after microfocused ultrasound, but publications and passive-reporting systems cannot measure frequency reliably. What does the evidence show?

A recent systematic review found few significant events in published studies while MAUDE reports included lipoatrophy, neurological effects and scarring. Passive systems such as MAUDE have under-reporting, duplicates, incomplete verification and an unknown denominator. They cannot support either a 'never occurs' claim or a reliable percentage risk.

Why a photograph is not enough

Nonstandard before-and-after images may show apparent volume differences because of focal length, head position, lighting and expression. Weight loss, dental work, other energy procedures, filler dissolution and natural ageing may also affect appearance. Assessment should combine a timeline, examination, matched photography and another specialist opinion when appropriate.
