How does a laser cooling method influence burn risk?

Contact sapphire, cryogen spray or cold air may protect the epidermis and reduce pain, but none makes an inappropriate wavelength, fluence, pulse, overlap or contact safe. Cooling temperature, duration and timing need validation with the device.

Understand what the method cools

A contact window may remove surface heat before, during and after a pulse; cryogen provides brief timed evaporative cooling; cold air produces convection across a wider area. Intended epidermal protection must be matched to wavelength and pulse. A cooled tip does not prove correct tip temperature or full skin contact. Gel, window contamination and pressure can change both energy and heat transfer.

Make cooling failure visible

Check startup self-test, temperature display, airflow, hose, filter, cryogen level, spray pattern and handpiece surface according to current instructions. Stop after unexpected heat, sharp pain, blistering, grey-white surface or irregular erythema. Less pain under topical anaesthesia or strong cooling does not prove a safe thermal effect. Do not test a suspect handpiece on another person before service verification.

Skin-tone and follow-up context

Melanin-rich or recently tanned skin may absorb more epidermal energy, and cooling cannot reduce that risk to zero. Record baseline tone, target, parameters, cooling type and setting, and immediate and delayed endpoints. A new blister, open wound, increasing pain, discharge or rapidly changing colour needs early assessment. Cooling brand or comfort cannot guarantee outcome, pigment-free healing or absence of scar.
