How should allergy history be verified when a filler contains lidocaine?

Some prefilled HA fillers contain lidocaine, while a separate topical or injected anaesthetic may also be used. A statement such as I am allergic or I was fine is insufficient until the exact product, timing and symptoms of the earlier event are clarified.

Read the exact filler label for lidocaine and other excipients.
Fainting, palpitations, toxicity, anxiety and true hypersensitivity are not the same event.

Reconstruct the event

Ask which medicine or filler was used, route, dose, concurrent adrenaline, minutes or hours to onset and treatment received. Urticaria, face or throat swelling, wheeze and hypotension differ from needle fear, rapid heartbeat or expected numbness. Review an old report and product label when available.

Separate layers of exposure

Lidocaine may be inside the filler, while topical cream, nerve block or a separate injection has another formulation and excipients. Tolerating one product does not prove tolerance to every amide anaesthetic or preservative; an unclear dental event does not prove allergy to every lidocaine-containing filler either. Preparedness and documentation

Do not use an elective procedure as a test when serious hypersensitivity is possible.
