What do bolus, fanning and linear filler-technique terms actually describe?

Bolus, linear threading, serial puncture and fanning describe ways product may be deposited in tissue; none is a certificate of safety or a natural result. Risk depends on anatomy, plane, product, instrument, volume, pressure, speed and emergency readiness working together.

What the terms describe

A bolus may describe a defined deposit at one point; linear threading places product along a track; fanning uses multiple tracks from one entry; serial puncture uses separate small deposits. These broad labels do not reveal needle versus cannula, force at the tip, true anatomical plane or volume per deposit. Without those details, papers and marketing demonstrations cannot be meaningfully compared.

Why safety is wider than a technique name

Vascular courses vary, and a moving tip can cross tissue planes. Product rheology, needle diameter, injection pressure and existing scar or filler also affect distribution. Slow delivery or a cannula may change components of risk; neither makes vascular occlusion impossible. Current product instructions, training and region-specific anatomy must be considered together.

What belongs in the patient record

The record should not say only 'fanning technique'. Document product and lot, total and regional volume, needle or cannula type, entry sites, intended plane, important observations and injector.
